New Zealand pig farmers are facing unprecedented changes to the way they farm.
The New Zealand Government is proposing drastic and unjustifiable changes to pig farming practices even as we already face a wave of imported pork produced using practices that are illegal according to New Zealand’s current standards.
These changes could result in the deaths of thousands of additional piglets, pig farms shutting down, and force Kiwis to rely on even more imported pork.
Our pig farmers support science-backed improvements to animal welfare, but the changes proposed by Government could force farmers out of business and put the price of New Zealand born and raised pork out of the reach of many Kiwis.
We need your help to ensure our farmers can continue to produce New Zealand born and raised pork to high animal welfare and environmental standards.
NZPork has submitted alternative proposals to government, which represent the most significant changes to New Zealand pig farming in a generation.
The proposals are based on an in-depth review of contemporary pig welfare science.
Collectively, these exceed welfare standards for all major pork-producing countries. If supported by meaningful mitigation options from Government, they would be more achievable for farmers and provide consumers with continued access to NZ-born pork, raised to high welfare standards.
